FEATURING
Miguel Zenón, alto saxophone
Susie Ibarra, drums/percussion
The PRISM Quartet joins forces with alto saxophonist Miguel Zenón and percussionist/drummer Susie Ibarra in a wide ranging program that celebrates the intersection of multiple musical traditions.
Zenón and PRISM perform Chris Potter’s Improvisations, Matthew Levy’s Forbidden Drive, and Zenón’s The Missing Piece from the Quartet’s acclaimed Heritage/Evolution project. PRISM initiated H/E in 2014 to chart fresh musical territory, drawing on the saxophone’s cross-cultural heritage to blend jazz with everything from Western and South Indian classical music to Romani and Latin American folkloric music.
Also in program, PRISM is joined by Susie Ibarra in a performance of her stunning 2018 work, Procession, along the Aciga Tree. The work is inspired by processional music in forests in the northern Philippines to Kalinga, the tree of treasures. Aciga draws upon interlocking rhythms, shifting melodies, and cross rhythms from Ibarra’s own cultural heritage.
The program also includes several electrifying commissions and newly arranged masterworks from PRISM’s popular Hit Parade program, with music by Schumann, Bach, Scarlatti, Sondheim, Roshanne Etezady and Michael Daugherty.
